For the 2010 model year, the Land Rover line receives a number of important performance, technology and interior upgrades.
Land Rover presented the media with an overview of the changes and upgrades to the 2010 models and then let us loose in the countryside of Vermont on road and off. The changes were needed enhancements done across the board to improve the vehicles’ level of luxury, performance and convenience.
For the 2010 model year the LR3 turns into the LR4; the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport keep their names but get subtle exterior changes. All the Land Rover and Range Rover exteriors have been upgraded with smoother, less busy noses with new LED headlamps, new grilles and bumpers receiving the most attention. Rolling stock has been upgraded to 19-inch status with optional 20-inch tires available on the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
While Land Rover was pretty pleased with the new exterior changes it spent most of the presentation discussing the revised interiors. Finally the Land Rover and Range Rover interiors back up the primo exterior and high level of technology. Land Rover realized that less is more with a reduction in the number of buttons and dials and ditched the complicated infotainment system, replacing it with easier-touse touch-screen units.
The dash design and gauge cluster in all models also have been revised; they are much more contemporary. I was impressed with the upgrade in the materials, surfaces and attention to detail. The aluminum trim is actually aluminum instead of painted plastic and all the interior panels now have a soft feel to them.
Seats also receive an upgrade in the first and second rows.
Buyers will like the new ambient lighting system consisting of white LEDs focused on the door handles and the center console area when exterior lights are activated. The steering wheels also have been revised with better controls.
In the Range Rover the traditional gauges have been replaced by a 12-inch thin film transistor (TFT) screen, which presents all essential driver information via virtual dials and graphic displays; it looks like something you would see on your laptop.
The LR4 gets a smaller 5.0-inch TFT display nestled between the speedometer and tachometer to keep tabs on what the vehicle is doing. Another cool high-tech addition includes an optional 360-degree camera system consisting of five separate digital cameras that monitor the sides and the ground all around the LR4. This setup came in handy when I was off-roading because it allowed me to see how close I was to trees, rocks and obstacles.
For the 2010 all Land Rovers get a power infusion via a new direct-injection 5.0-liter V-8. Horsepower climbs by 75 to reach a healthy 375 and torque is a mirror at 375 pound-feet; this upgrade really helps to move the mass smartly.
On supercharged versions the 5.0-liter block gets “puffed” with a sixth-generation Eaton twin-vortex supercharger that pumps up horsepower to 510 and produces 461 pound-feet of torque.
Backing these V-8 engines are silkysmooth ZF six-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive. Fuel economy has improved slightly for 2010 and ranges from 12/13 city to 17/18 highway on the different vehicle and engines.
What you can’t see is how tough the LR4 and Range Rover are off-road. For that Land Rover let us loose in the woods and threw in some water hazards to verify their prowess. The Range Rover Sport can go off-roading but it would take a beating.
Land Rover long ago established its reputation as a capable off-roader then added luxuries and technology to the mix.
For 2010 these vehicles receive some big improvements, including a change to Land Rover’s terrain response system. It now includes a launch control program for starting the SUV in sand or dirt.
Hill descent control has been revised to keep the vehicle in a slower decent down steep hills. Gradient release control is another new feature that prevents the vehicle from attaining speed too fast when you take your foot off the brake. I tried out these enhancements on some very steep hills and they improve off-roading safety and comfort level.
While these vehicles can handle extreme off-road conditions, the 2010 Land Rovers are pleasant to drive on the road. They received braking, steering and suspension enhancements. These upgrades allow you to drive the LR4, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport with more confidence and control.
Surprisingly the 2010 Land Rovers have a value story to tell: The upgraded interior and technology enhancements have been added without a large increase in base pricing. The LR4 starts at $48,100 but there are plenty of add-on packages and options, including a $9,565 HSE LUX package. The Range Rover Sport HSE starts at $60,495 and the supercharged (S/C) version checks in at $74,195. The Range Rover HSE starts at $79,275, the supercharged (S/C) at $95,125 and there are plenty of optional packages to enhance the ride.

Range Rover Sport retains a certain mystique
Scott Burgess / The Detroit News
There's just something about Land Rover.
A few years ago, when SUV sales fell through the floor, Land Rover seemed immune. Even during this tight economy, as car sales have plummeted, Land Rover, a luxury SUV maker, reported a 6.6 percent increase in sales for October.
Oh, it's taken its bumps and bruises along the trail -- as has every truck maker in recent history. But every day, another person falls under Land Rover's spell of crossing the Sahara to attend a Hollywood premiere.
The 2010 Range Rover Sport carries that mystique even further. It's rugged, capable and absolute luxury at the same time. It's also vastly improved for the 2010 model year. It can negotiate the wilds of the world, no matter what the driver's personal jungle may be, and with stoic class that few can match.
Perhaps it's a combination of its British lineage and current wealthy clientele that allows Land Rover to bypass so much judgment.
It's easy to forget all of that anti-SUV rhetoric behind the wheel of the Range Rover Sport. Why gripe when you can enjoy the ride?
It may cost $80,000, but somewhere between the superb leather back seats and the 510-supercharged horses under the hood, it feels worth even more. The new engine was developed to provide additional power (29 percent increase) without using more fuel. It also meets ULEV2 emission standards.
Enhanced engine power
The engine, with 461 pound-feet of torque, lets this luxury vehicle take off like a Spitfire -- if not faster. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in under six seconds and has a top speed of 140 mph. The performance increases also come from the sixth generation Eaton twin vortex supercharger, which includes twin intercoolers and improved air intake.
There are proven high tech features on it, such as the enhanced electronic air suspension that adjusts automatically to the road under its wheels. The independent suspension makes every gorge feel like a pothole. There is little the Range Rover Sport cannot overcome.
The Range Rover Sport comes with more response systems than a U.S. Army QRF team in Baghdad. There's the Terrain Response, which adjusts the vehicle's wheel spin, engine, transmission and differentials depending upon the surface it's riding on. Then there's the Dynamic Response System, a standard feature on the supercharged Range Rover Sport that adjusts the computer controlled active anti roll system.
Push a button and the Range Rover Sport will adjust its ground clearance from 6.8 inches to 8.9 inches. It's the difference between getting to base camp and parking an axle on a rock. The active dampening system is all new for the 2010 Range Rover Sport.
But why anyone would want to take it off road is beyond me. The Range Rover Sport is beautiful.
This is the grand touring model and Land Rover has redesigned the interior with an emphasis on the "grand" aspect.
Leather is used throughout the cabin and it feels like a well-read leather book, broken in through appreciation. The deep leather seats are extremely comfortable and will hold a driver and passengers through heavy off-road driving or just along the highway.
Land Rover has added a number of high-tech features, such as a new hard drive navigation system that is faster than the previous version in the Range Rover Sport, though the screen catches glare badly and can sometimes be difficult to see.
A new Surround Camera System uses five cameras on the outside to provide a full view around the vehicle when trying to park in tight spots or back up to a trailer.
Sharp exterior upgrades
Outside, Land Rover has tidied up the exterior, keeping its good looks but straightening out its once ruffled hair.
The dark windows and blacked out green house and new two-bar grille make the Range Rover Sport look more menacing. For the 2010 model, Land Rover added LED headlights, changed out the bumper and fenders to give it a more flowing look.
For those people who love Land Rovers in general and Range Rover Sports in particular, your feelings will only grow stronger with this new model.
For those who don't care for these beautiful vehicles, it's only because you haven't spent enough time with them.
There's just something about them.

SPECIAL TAX BREAK FOR NEW-VEHICLE PURCHASES THIS YEAR
A glimpse of the sun in an otherwise overcast economy? The Internal Revenue Service announced recently that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns.
If you’re thinking about buying a new car, truck or SUV, this deduction could enable you to buy now and get cash back later on your tax return, an attractive incentive.
This is particularly good news for Ford shoppers. One of the industry’s most respected nameplates, Mustang, brings a sleek new entry to the table while Taurus, one of the most successful Ford cars in recent history, makes a stunning return to the showroom. The newest gas sippers, the 2010 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid, and the 2010 Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid, share the title of the most fuel-efficient midsize sedans in America.* The distinctive new Lincoln MKZ also joins the lineup, with a look that’s hard to miss. These are a few of the Ford family highlights.
The deduction applies to any new vehicle purchased after 2/16/09 and before 1/1/10.
Naturally, there are some restrictions and exceptions. To get all the facts, contact the IRS or consult your tax advisor.**
The point is simply this: It’s a great time to buy that Ford, Lincoln or Mercury you’ve had your eye on. Visit your Ford or Lincoln Mercury Dealer for a test-drive or log onto fordvehicles.com,mercuryvehicles.com or lincoln.com to see the great lineup that could earn you a break from the IRS.
*EPA-estimated 23 city/34 hwy/27 combined mpg, Fusion S I-4 automatic and Milan I-4 automatic with Rapid Spec 101A; 41 city/36 hwy mpg, Fusion Hybrid and Milan Hybrid. Actual mileage will vary. Midsize class per R. L. Polk & Co.
**The tax benefit to a purchaser will depend on individual tax circumstances and may be reduced or eliminated based on the purchaser's modified adjusted gross income. Customers should consult their tax advisors or the IRS to confirm processes and the amount of tax deduction that they may claim. For more information, log onto www.irs.gov.

FORD INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST INFLATABLE SEAT BELTS TO ENHANCE REAR SEAT SAFETY
Ford introduces the auto industry’s first-ever production inflatable seat belts, which are designed to provide additional protection for rear-seat occupants, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to head, chest and neck injuries
Ford’s inflatable rear seat belts will debut on the next-generation Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, which goes into production next year; Ford eventually plans to offer inflatable seat belt technology in vehicles globally .
Ford’s inflatable rear seat belts spread crash forces over five times more area of the body than conventional seat belts; this helps reduce pressure on the chest and helps control head and neck motion for rear seat passengers.
More than 90 percent of Ford research participants indicated that Ford’s inflatable seat belts are similar to or more comfortable than traditional belts, which could help increase the lower rate of rear belt usage .
DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 5, 2009 – Ford Motor Company is bringing to market the world’s first automotive inflatable seat belts, combining attributes of traditional seat belts and air bags to provide an added level of crash safety protection for rear seat occupants.
The advanced restraint system is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries.
Ford will introduce inflatable rear seat belts on the next-generation Ford Explorer, which goes into production next year for the North American market. Over time, Ford plans to offer the technology in vehicles globally.
“Ford’s rear inflatable seat belt technology will enhance safety for rear-seat passengers of all ages, especially for young children who are more vulnerable in crashes,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president of Sustainability, Environmental and Safety Engineering. “This is another unique family technology that builds on our safety leadership, including the most top safety ratings of any automaker.”
Safer and more comfortableAdvances in air bag inflation and seat belt construction methods have enabled Ford and its suppliers to develop inflatable seat belts that are designed to deploy over a vehicle occupant’s torso and shoulder in 40 milliseconds in the event of a crash.
In everyday use, the inflatable belts operate like conventional seat belts and are safe and compatible with infant and children safety car and booster seats. In Ford’s research, more than 90 percent of those who tested the inflatable seat belts found them to be similar to or more comfortable than a conventional belt because they feel padded and softer. That comfort factor could help improve the 61 percent rear belt usage rate in the U.S., which compares to 82 percent usage by front seat passengers, according National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.
“Ford is pioneering inflatable seat belt technology to help enhance crash safety protection, while encouraging more people to buckle up with a more comfortable belt,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford vice president, Engineering, Global Product Development.
In the event of a frontal or side crash, the inflatable belt’s increased diameter more effectively holds the occupant in the appropriate seating position, helping to reduce the risk of injury.
Vehicle safety sensors determine the severity of the collision in the blink of an eye and deploy the inflatable belts’ air bags. Each belt’s tubular air bag inflates with cold compressed gas, which flows through a specially designed buckle from a cylinder housed below the seat.
The inflatable belt’s accordion-folded bag breaks through the belt fabric as it fills with air, expanding sideways across the occupant’s body in about the same amount of time it takes a car traveling at highway speed to cover a yard of distance.
The use of cold compressed gas instead of a heat-generating chemical reaction – which is typical of traditional air bag systems – means the inflated belts feel no warmer on the wearer’s body than the ambient temperature. The inflatable belts also fill at a lower pressure and a slower rate than traditional air bags, because the device does not need to close a gap between the belt and the occupant.
“It’s a very simple and logical system, but it required extensive trial and error and testing over several years to prove out the technology and ensure precise reliable performance in a crash situation,” said Srini Sundararajan, safety technical leader for Ford research and advance engineering.
The inflated belt helps distribute crash force energy across five times more of the occupant’s torso than a traditional belt, which expands its range of protection and reduces risk of injury by diffusing crash pressure over a larger area, while providing additional support to the head and neck. After deployment, the belt remains inflated for several seconds before dispersing its air through the pores of the air bag.
Ford’s safety leadership record continues to growThe inflatable seat belt debuting on the next-generation Ford Explorer continues Ford’s record of safety innovation. Ford today has more 5-star U.S. government ratings and “Top Safety Picks” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety than any other automaker.
Ford was the first automaker to front and rear lap seat belts in 1955 and led the way in making driver and front-passenger air bags standard in most vehicles by 1993.
This year, Ford introduced radar-enabled Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning with Brake Support and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA).
These technologies – introduced on the new 2010 Ford Taurus and Fusion – help drivers avoid potential dangerous crash situations using radar to detect the relative position of other vehicles and warn the driver with a combination of visual and audio alerts.
Ford’s other recent seat belt and air bag innovations include the industry-first BeltMinder system in 2000, which the U.S. government credited with increasing front belt usage by 5 percent in Ford vehicles. On the 2002 Explorer, Ford launched the industry’s first rollover-activated side curtain air bags – called Safety Canopy – as well as Roll Stability Control technology that goes a step beyond traditional stability control systems by helping measure and prevent side-to-side skidding and dangerous situations that could lead to rollovers.
Ford also introduced on the 2009 F-150 and 2010 Taurus some of the industry’s first pressure-based air bag technologies that help deploy side air bags up to 30 percent faster.

Ford Says October Sales Rose After Clunker Hangover
Ford Motor Co. said U.S. auto sales rose in October from a month earlier as the industry probably rebounded from the drop in demand that followed the so-called cash for clunkers program.
“The roller coaster is pretty much over,” Ken Czubay, the U.S. sales chief, told reporters today at Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. “People aren’t all of a sudden popping Champagne corks, but they are feeling on the bubble of being more stable.”
Industrywide October sales of cars and trucks ran at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 10.3 million, based on the average of 9 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. The rate was 10.6 million a year earlier.
Sales at a pace of 10 million or more would make October the first month this year to top that mark without the benefit of the government’s clunkers incentives, which ran from July 27 through Aug. 24. September deliveries slumped after the U.S. rebates drained demand and depleted dealers’ inventory.
“Industry sales of light vehicles appear to have continued their steady recovery since the post-clunkers trough of last month, benefiting from improved vehicle availability, and from higher incentive spending and marketing activity by the automakers,” Brian Johnson, a Chicago-based analyst with Barclays Capital, said in a note to investors Oct. 28.
While Czubay didn’t project Ford’s results for the month, he said the second-largest U.S. automaker was “pleased” with its performance and that it was still “too close to call” whether sales would rise from a year earlier
