Ford Motor Company Educates Teens on the Dangers of Distracted Driving

DEARBORN -- Ford Motor Company is intensifying its efforts to educate teen drivers about the dangers of distracted driving – such as texting while driving – through a new initiative under its nationwide Ford Driving Skills for Life (FDSFL) program.

On the eve of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Distracted Driving Summit, Ford Motor Company Fund will host a special FDSFL event in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Sept. 29, demonstrating specialized training methods designed to help teens recognize and avoid driving distractions such as manually dialing a phone or texting. Ford recently became the first automaker to endorse a federal ban on manually sending text messages on hand-held devices while driving.

“It is important for automakers, lawmakers and communities to work together in addressing this escalating concern,” said Jim Graham, community relations manager, Ford Motor Company Fund. “Vehicle crashes take a major toll on our nation’s youth every year, which is why we are committed to teaching eyes-on-the-road, hands-on-the-wheel techniques.”

Since its inception in 2003, FDSFL has provided a series of nationwide events focused on advanced, hands-on training from some of the nation’s top professional instructors. The FDSFL program also encourages high school students to create safe driving promotions targeting peers. A complimentary online educational Web site, www.DrivingSkillsForLife.com, draws hundreds of thousands of additional teens, parents and educators annually.

The program is centered on Ford research that identified the lack of key skills – speed management, space management, vehicle handling and hazard recognition – that leads to 60 percent of vehicle crashes for newly licensed drivers, ages 16 to 19 years old. Auto accidents are the leading cause of death for teens in America, claiming nearly 5,000 lives each year.

Driving away dangerous distractionsNow, in addition to those key skill areas, FDSFL instructors are intensifying the focus on distraction management by routinely challenging students’ powers of concentration during supervised drives on controlled courses using a variety of methods. They prompt drivers to visually and verbally interact with passengers and manually operate the car radio, climate controls and mobile electronic devices such as an MP3 player or cell phone. By increasing the distractions, the instructors help students recognize and avoid dangerous behaviors.

Simple actions such as taking a water bottle from a passenger, opening it and drinking from it while negotiating a pylon-lined course demonstrate the risks involved in multitasking behind the wheel. Additional actions such as searching for a song on an iPod or interacting with multiple passengers also challenge young drivers to stay the course without hitting pylons.

“Adults treat distractions much differently because, with experience, they’ve come to understand that the driving environment can change quickly and dramatically while you’re looking away from the road,” says Graham. “That’s why we believe it’s important to help teach these skills earlier before kids face this in the real world.”

Research driving solutionsAccording to a NHTSA-sponsored 100-car study conducted by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, driver inattention that may involve looking away from the road for more than a few seconds is a factor in nearly 80 percent of accidents.

“A growing number of drivers are using hand-held wireless communications and music-playing devices while driving,” said Dr. Louis Tijerina, Ford senior technical specialist. “Research clearly shows that manual operation of those devices that takes the driver’s eyes from the road for extended times creates the kind of distraction that causes accidents.”

Ford developed the VIRtual Test Track EXperiment (VIRTTEX), a state-of-the-art simulator that monitors and analyzes a variety of driving behaviors. Since opening in 2001, Ford has completed a number of driver distraction studies that have contributed to the development of FDSFL, the MyKey™ programmable teen-safety feature and SYNC® hands-free communication technology.

“Our studies show that teens, particularly 16- and 17-year-olds, are much more willing to take risks while driving, such as manually dialing on a mobile phone in situations that demand greater attention,” said Jeff Greenberg, senior technical leader, Ford Research & Advanced Engineering.

This is just the beginning. Every single feature of the 2010 Lincoln MKS is oozing with innovation.

Adaptive Cruise Control is made possible by sensors that detect the speed of the moving traffic where you are driving. When the sensors detect that traffic is slow, the car slows down and when they detect that the traffic has cleared, it resumes the speed you have set.

Collision warning with brake support – sensors that can foresee a potential rear-end collision with the vehicle in front, alert you while automatically increasing the brake assist sensitivity. This will give maximum responsiveness when you brake.

The Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System actively transfers torque to the wheel or wheels that have the best traction, hence giving you a comfortable driving experience in any weather.

The steering wheel mounted paddle shifters allow you to shift gears without taking your hands off the steering wheel. Or you can also use the conventional shifter at the center console.

Secretary Steven Chu announced that the Department of Energy has closed on its loan offer of $5.9 billion to Ford Motor Company

Washington, DC – Today, Secretary Steven Chu announced that the Department of Energy has closed on its loan offer of $5.9 billion to Ford Motor Company to transform factories across Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio to produce more fuel efficient models. The loan is part of the Department’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program, which supports the development of innovative, advanced vehicle technologies to create thousands of clean energy jobs while helping reduce the nation’s dangerous dependence on foreign oil. The loan for Ford Motor Company is the first to be finalized since the program was appropriated in the fall of 2008.

This announcement builds on steps taken by the Obama Administration earlier this week to require an average fuel economy of 35.5 miles per gallon in the year 2016. That standard will reduce oil consumption by an estimated 1.8 billion barrels, prevent greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 950 million metric tons, and save consumers more than $3,000 in fuel costs. The funding announced today will help Ford meet those targets.

“This investment is part of our commitment to creating the clean energy jobs of the future while supporting American innovation," US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said. "We can revitalize the American auto industry and at the same time reduce our dependence on oil and cut our carbon pollution."

On June 23, 2009, DOE issued a conditional loan commitment to Ford to finance up to 80 percent of qualified expenditures to improve the efficiency of light vehicles by using technologies that improve internal combustion engines and transmissions, reduce vehicle weight, reduce vehicle drag with more aerodynamic designs, and improve vehicle efficiency through the development of hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles. The loan proceeds will enable Ford to raise the fuel efficiency of more than a dozen popular models, representing close to two million new vehicles annually, and save more than 200 million gallons of gas a year.

The Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program is focusing on helping domestic manufacturers apply the best available technologies to improve the efficiency of the vehicles they produce. In June of this year, the Department of Energy announced conditional loan offers to Ford Motor Company, Tesla Motors, and Nissan Motors for a total of $8 billion. The program was appropriated $7.5 billion by Congress to support up to $25 billion in loans to companies making cars and components in US factories that increase fuel economy at least 25 percent above 2005 fuel economy levels. The Department plans to make additional loans under this program over the next several months to large and small auto manufacturers and parts suppliers up and down the production chain.

Applications for the loan program have included vehicles running on electricity, biofuels, and advanced combustion engines, and were submitted by both car and component makers, US automakers, US manufacturing subsidiaries of non-US-based companies, major US auto parts suppliers, and innovative startups. The intense technical and financial review process is focused not on choosing a single technology over others, but is aimed at promoting multiple approaches for achieving a fuel efficient economy.

'Fusion+Hybrid' Facebook Friends Flock to 'You Speak Green' App as Sales Hit Record Levels

DEARBORN -- Debbie Santiago is turning off the lights when she leaves a room. Frances Ruiz is avoiding plastic water bottles in favor of an aluminum bottle. And Kameel Zakaria is using a rain barrel for watering his garden. These are just a few of the more than 15,000 people who have shared "green" lifestyle tips on the new "Fusion + Hybrid" Facebook app called "You Speak Green" - the latest example of Ford's campaign to engage consumers on their own terms.
Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are more popular than ever. That’s why Ford has increased its presence in the digital space to better enable an open dialogue with consumers about sustainable lifestyle choices in which personal transportation can be both environmentally responsible and fun.

Data suggest that social media sites are increasingly one of the best ways to reach out to consumers. According to Nielsen Company research, the total minutes spent on social networking sites in the U.S. has increased in 2009 by 83 percent year-over-year. Total minutes spent on Facebook increased nearly 700 percent year-over-year, growing from 1.7 billion minutes in April 2008 to 13.9 billion in April 2009, the most recent month reported.

The new Ford Fusion “You Speak Green” Facebook app is designed to encourage people to talk about ways to live sustainably and features a vine graphic that grows with each new eco-conscious comment, demonstrating the power of a collective effort through recycling, water conservation and other actions. Its design was inspired by the Fusion Hybrid’s innovative SmartGauge™ instrument cluster, which uses a similar leafy vine that grows as the motorist drives more fuel efficiently.

The app, which Ford created in collaboration with Wunderman-Team Detroit and social technology provider Vitrue, is an interactive component of the online “We Speak Car” campaign (http://www.fordvehicles.com/2010fusion/) that debuted in March. Since the app’s mid-July launch, more than 104,000 Facebook users have downloaded it to their profile pages and 15,000 have posted tips.

“The user response to the Fusion Facebook ‘You Speak Green’ app has been outstanding," said Adam Barrow, Ford digital marketing analyst. "By providing users tools to support and amplify their self expression and their point of view, we veer away from being intrusive and start to build a true relationship. That relationship will build brand awareness and consideration in an authentic way.”

Another example of Ford’s groundbreaking social media outreach is its support of the Fiesta Movement campaign to promote the company’s sporty, savvy new small car through social media agents. Agent postings have garnered significant numbers on social media sites, including more than 3.5 million YouTube views (http://www.fiestamovement.com/), more than 440,000 Flickr views and more than 2.7 million Twitter impressions.

2010 Land Rover LR4 Test Drive: New Refinement for Off-Road Juggernaut

From Popular Mechanics.com http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/automotive_news/4329657.html

LEDBURY, England—If there were one major aspect that impresses about the Land Rover, it is the extraordinary breadth of capability shown by the company's cars, not least the LR4 we sampled in Scotland recently. The scope of every Land Rover's operation is striking. One moment you're cruising Britain's motorways at 80 mph on beautifully damped air springs, ensconced in soft leather, the next you're nearly door handle deep in liquid mud, scrabbling for a way back onto the path. It seems unimaginable that anyone would want to subject their cherished personal transport to this kind of abuse, but that's what every Land Rover is engineered to do. What's more, the 2010 LR4 continues to serve up luxury and off-road performance with panache. —Barry Winfield

The Specs
Now powered by a new direct-injection 5.0-liter V8 engine, co-developed with Jaguar, producing 375 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque, the LR4 has about 25 percent more power than was available in the LR3. In fact, Land Rover is proud that the new car accelerates to 100 mph and then brakes to a complete stop before the previous model reaches 100 mph. And they quote the zero-to-60 mph sprint takes just 7.5 seconds. Called simply the LRV8, the new engine boasts variable valve-timing and lift, the latter provided by a spring between the cam follower and valve stem that reduces or increases the valve excursion. The phase-shifting aspect of the valve-timing control is powered by the torque pulses of the valve train itself, rather than by a power-robbing oil-pump. Designed to meet the latest ULEV2 emissions requirements, the LRV8 has cut CO2 output by 8 percent, yet equals the fuel consumption figures—12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway (8.3 gallons/100 miles and 5.9 g/100m)—of the outgoing 4.4-liter engine. This motor is mated to a six-speed ZF transmission calibrated to match its specific characteristics.

Abundant low-rev torque has allowed higher gearing with much more frequent torque-convertor lockup for optimal efficiency. The suspension has been revised over the previous LR3, with a new variable-ratio steering gear and new front knuckle design to close the gap between the car's center of gravity and the suspension system's roll center in order to reduce roll motions. Further roll control is provided by a larger anti-roll bar. For 2010, the LR4 features revised versions of Land Rover's hill descent control and terrain response system—a rotary switch-selected device that offers five specific chassis and drivetrain calibrations tuned for almost any circumstances you're likely to encounter: normal highway driving, grass/gravel/snow, sand, mud and ruts, and rock crawl. Capping the comprehensive engineering upgrade is a noticeable restyling job by design director Gerry McGovern, employing new headlights, honeycomb grille, and front bumper in a more contemporary and integrated look. New rear lights help update the tail end, too. An all-new interior provides a much improved ambiance. It's studded with the trappings of modern vehicular luxury, like a five-camera surround system (that even shows what's beneath the front of the car), keyless entry, push button start, electronic parking brake, iPod input and some of the most sophisticated thin-film displays (for onboard systems) we've seen.

The Drive
The LR4 is still a big, heavy vehicle, and the addition of extra equipment has not changed that fact, despite several simultaneous weight-saving strategies. But the big Land Rover's torquey engine, smooth transmission and smart suspension all team to provide the car with a poise and agility that belies the 5800-pound avoirdupois. Ride motions are well controlled, and without any excessive roll and pitch to confound its handling the LR4 imparts considerable driver confidence. Now fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels and surprisingly low-profile mud-and-snow tires, the LR4 handles predictably and can be pushed harder than anyone has the right to expect from something this heavy. The car's real charm lies in its Jekyll-and-Hyde character shift. The LR4 is able to strafe the freeways with occupants sitting comfortably in that commanding position, then pump itself up to ford a muddy-bottomed stream. All with relatively few concessions made to overall utility and convenience. Since not many people will ever exploit the LR4's multi-modal off-road talent, it's just as well that the normal-use calibrations are so user-friendly, offering a plush, well-damped ride with precise control.

The Bottom Line
At $48,100, the base 2010 LR4 comes in at about $1,276 more than its 2009 LR3 predecessor, but the retail cost of its additional equipment is $2,600. Or so Land Rover's marketing guys would like you believe. The uplevel HSE model's sticker climbs from $50,325 to $51,750, but again offers more content than that price difference would cover. The major difference between old LR3 and new LR4 is that great new engine, although we certainly cannot downplay how much better the exterior appearance and the interior fittings are on the new one. When you're in one, there's an undeniable sense of privilege and security. How do you put a price on that?

Ford on Track to Be #1 U.S. Carmaker

September 2, 2009

Ford on Track to Be #1 U.S. Carmaker

Things are looking up for the one American automaker that didn’t go for a government bailout, and it’s not just because of “cash-for-clunkers.”

Ford’s recent navigation of financial shoals is paying off big-time. The Detroit automaker took a different tack than its rivals, which sought aid from the federal government and shelter in bankruptcy court. It’s on course to grab the brass ring in 2010, becoming No. 1 in U.S. auto sales. An $18-billion low interest loan in 2006 — when the company mortgaged itself, including its iconic blue oval insignia — is allowing Ford to remake operations. It’s slashing costs and developing common bodies, braking and wiring systems for its vehicles worldwide and putting in place new flexible assembly lines that let plants shift rapidly from making one model to another. Plus, Ford is committed to new model development — pledging to revamp its entire fleet by early 2011, and then repeating the feat in a few years. As a result, by year-end 2010, Ford’s U.S. sales will likely edge out both General Motors’ and Toyota’s, but it’ll be a photo finish. The best bet: Toyota will come in second and GM will slip to third. Already, Ford’s share of U.S. auto sales is climbing. It’s likely to top 16% this year and be a hair over 17% next, mainly at the expense of GM and Chrysler. A market share gain of one percentage point reverses a slide that had plagued the firm for more than a decade. GM’s share of new-vehicle sales will be about 19.5% this year, nearly one percentage point lower than in 2008, and come in at barely 17% in 2010. Chrysler’s share will continue to plunge. Its slice of vehicles sold by new-car dealers will slip and slide to as low as 8.5% this year and around 8% in 2010, down from 11% in 2008.

Foreign brands will largely hold their own through 2010, with Honda and Toyota posting small gains next year. Ford is getting a boost from a new cycle of models whose popularity seems to be hitting its stride. “There is a perception that Ford has its fingers on the pulse of what consumers want to buy, whether this be a raft of hybrids, such as the Fusion, Escape and Mariner, or the new Taurus,” says Howard Kuperman, president of Phil’s Ford Lincoln Mercury in Port Jervis, N.Y., and chairman of the New York State Automobile Dealers Association. It’s not just curbside appeal that’s giving Ford’s sales a lift. “Consumers are making a decision to buy a Ford product because it did not accept federal bailout money, as did GM and Chrysler, and it didn’t go through bankruptcy as did the other two,” says Aaron Bragman, an auto analyst with IHS Global Insight, a business consultancy. Such consumer anger may fade over time, but Ford’s sales should keep gaining as it builds on strong sales through next year with the introduction of all-new Focus and Fiesta small cars and an ultraefficient commercial van, the Transit Connect, says Bragman.
