Jaguar is the most premium automaker to offer a factory-backed performance driving school, as it launches the R Performance Academy. In opening the program, Jaguar joins the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW, all of whom offer high-performance driving courses in a variety of international settings. Unlike some of those other automakers, Jaguar is offering free tuition for buyers of its two performance-oriented R models, the 2010 Jaguar XFR sedan and the 2010 XKR coupe. Both R models feature the same 5.0L 510-hp V-8 engines and each car is used extensively in the R Performance Academy curriculum.

That curriculum includes a pre-event dinner where R Performance Academy instructors will trade racing anecdotes and explain the driving program. The following day is the main event and is spent behind the wheel of Jaguar R Performance Academy cars during a variety of exercises and on-track driving. Among the topics to be covered are maximum acceleration using Jaguar Drive Control settings, panic braking and familiarity with the ABS system, emergency lane changes, driving with traction control systems both limited and turned fully off, cornering, an autocross exercise, and full laps at speed with a driving coach riding shotgun. At the end of the day, the driving instructors will even take students out on the track for a few hot laps to show them how it's done. The first Jaguar R Performance Academy event is set for December first at Homestead Miami Speedway - a 2.210-mile, 14-turn road course. Starting in 2010, the program will be expanded to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, New York, and the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Invitations to attend the academy will be mailed to all purchasers of 2010 Jaguar R models.
